The European Architectural

Heritage Year 1975

50th anniversary

In 2025, the European Architectural Heritage Year 1975 will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The event was declared by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. The aim at the time was to raise public awareness of the irreplaceable cultural, social, and economic values of historic buildings and environments.

An underlying cause was the extensive and large-scale urban transformation projects, which involved demolitions, careless renovations, and even decay that had characterised post-war Europe.

Many large and small initiatives were undertaken across Europe, which have preserved numerous environments and sparked significant public interest in the built cultural heritage. In Sweden, the event was designated as the Building Preservation Year. Among other achievements, the Swedish Association for Building Preservation was established.

In 2025, we encounter similar challenges and aim to raise awareness about the Building Preservation Year and its message, which remains highly relevant today, particularly in the context of the climate crisis. Consequently, the anniversary will promote activities and initiatives from authorities, organisations, associations, and the engaged public.
